Pastor's Thoughts - May 2020

May 1, 2020

A Thought from Pastor Bryson

In 2 Corinthians 1:8-10 the apostle Paul expresses concern for his well-being and survival for that matter. The New Living Translation expresses his concerns well – “We were crushed and overwhelmed, and we thought we would never live through it. In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we learned not only to rely on ourselves, but on God who can raise the dead.”

As I read about the number of deaths from Coronavirus, the number of people who have been infected, the skyrocketing unemployment, I’m certain there are many who share the sentiments of Paul as it relates to being concerned. I recently read of a doctor who took her life after caring for so many who were sick with the dreaded virus.

These are tough times and there is no quick and easy fix. But I am convinced that what helped Paul will help countless others today. Paul relied on God. Verse 10 says of God – “And He did deliver us from mortal danger.” In other words, God provided the help they needed to make it through.

I am aware that people are dying – when there is a sickness for which there is no cure that is an unfortunate reality of life. Thankfully, some have survived in spite of there being no cure. But we need not be overwhelmed with utter despair and grief. He is able to provide strength and comfort. 2 Cor. 1:3 says of God – “He is the source of every mercy and the God who comforts us.”

It is my hope that people are looking to the right source for help in these difficult times. Politicians are struggling and bickering amongst themselves and truthfully I believe some don’t understand the gravity of the situation. They are not the ultimate help needed for such a time as this. One greater than us is needed and God is His name. Somehow, some way He came through for Paul and He is able to come through for us as well.

Please don’t despair – have faith in God. Read His word, pray, worship, remember His help in times past, and surround yourselves with people who will help you and not lead you into the valley of despair.

In the midst of everything, God is with us and is able to help us through.
